What would happen if two photographers who are each in the contemporary scene, shoot the exact same thing: model & costume, in the same 30 minutes, with the same outfit, same studio and same light? It's something I've been DYING to try for ages and past weekend I finally had this opportunity (by coincidence and/or happy accident).
I had just finished my workshop in the Netherlands. Before all that, Fairytas & I had been talking to collaborate and/or meetup and I proposed to see each other after my workshop. Not knowing if she would make it as she had another job to do that day; I was happy to receive a message in the late afternoon she was done earlier then planned so she would come over to Studio 34x for some quick shooting with her amazing Phoenix outfit. Me & some others, including Gemmy (who is an insanely good contemporary photographer which I highly admire) was still there. Long story short: I seduced her into going to dinner later so she could shoot with me. Richard & I had already been sneakily going up to both ladies to definitely make sure they would work together one day as it would be pure magic so the story escalated pretty fast & pretty good! I finally got to shoot both the lady behind Fairytas herself and got to shoot this insane outfit she created as well! Gemmy joined me right after and we both spend a short 10 minutes shooting this set.
I asked Gemmy today if she would be okay if I would put our pictures together to show the world how important it is to realize that "originality" is so much more than a costume and a set or a model or all of it together. Originality comes from within. It's in our souls & minds & hearts. Its what drives us to create as persons and what fuels our love for life. It's so important as well to be able to trust each other, grow with each other & create together: both on set as off set. Stay genuine and true to your vision because as you can see - the results are "us". We never felt the competition between us, we all enjoyed ourselves so good on set and we walked away with some insane shots for our portfolio. And Fairytas herself? Well she got double the goodness now!
I don't promote copying other artists. Don't ever even assume that is okay. Copying is a vile thing, pointless & despite popular belief "not the most flattering compliment to your work" either. What I do promote is respecting each other & working together. You can learn so much from studying each others work. But you will definitely gain even more from working together. Even if it means sharing a set, set-up, model, costume. It's all in that "communication" thing.
My piece is on the left. Gemmy her piece is on the right (as watermarked).
Special thanks to Studio 34X for letting us stay a bit longer, Fairytas for being such an amazing sport on set and coming over after a long day of work & last but not least Richard for his amazing assistance!
